Photoshop Elements 15 freezes on startup
Recently I started seeing Photoshop Elements 14 and 15 freeze upon startup for a few minutes. Once the period lapses, it functions normally, but it is enerving to have to wait a few minutes for it to "wake up". I searched the internet and the closest match claimed something regarding making an entry into the hotsts file in my windows/system32/drivers/etc directory and make an entry for static.photoshop.com to point to my local machine (127.0.0.1). However this reference was for old versions of PSE (10, 11, 12). I gave it a try and didn't get any improvement.
Another entry suggested erasing the preferences file for PHotoshop Editor (there are a couple of ways to do this) but that didn't work for me either.
After more debugging, I noticed in my task manager that PSE seemed to be deadlocked waiting for spoolssv to respond. Spoolssv is the printer spooler subsystem in windows. I checked it in control panel and found that my default printer was my network based printer which is hooked into my local NAS device. My network is standard 1 Gbps and my laptop is hooked directly through ethernet cable, so no sense the network would include some kind of lag. Blaming it on the NAS printer service (which sometimes is a bit sluggish in responding), I changed the default printer to a local PDF printer in my notebook, and voila.... problem solved. Now PSE starts instanteously without any notoriuos lag in response.
Hope this helps someone.
